You Likely Don’t Have a Content Strategy
Oh sure, you may have a shared Google slide presentation or doc where someone on your team (now or in the past) has declared you have a “customer first” content strategy.
Tell me which of your competitors has said they don’t prioritize a customer-first focus?
That’s right. None of them are saying that.
If everyone is customer-focused then it isn’t a strategy, it is table stakes to playing in the game.
I have spent hours, days, weeks, months and years thinking about strategy. I go out for long bike rides thinking about strategy. I go out on sweaty runs thinking about strategy. I have long conversations about content strategy over beers or coffee. I have books and books and books about strategy.
I’ve read through hundreds of “content strategies” that have nothing strategic about them at all. It begins with understanding your business, resources, constraints, audience and objectives and then building a content strategy that is achievable and measurable.
And what I have determined is you probably need a content strategy.
I answer the question, “What is Content Strategy?” as setting a course or roadmap based on your desired objective or goal, and given the resources and restrictions you have to get there.
You can check out several industry definitions for “What is Content Strategy?” over at Distilled.
I work with B2B, SaaS, and MarTech brands, among others, to create content strategies that will achieve your business objectives (as well as question if those are the right objectives given your market position, resources, competitors, and targeted audience).
There are a lot of services baked into my content strategy definition, including:
- Competitive analysis
- Business analysis
- Audience research
- Content audits
- Customer journey mapping
- Content strategy
- Editorial guidelines, including voice and tone
- Taxonomy and content governance
- Stakeholder alignment
- Content promotion
My content consulting services also include:
- Roadmapping workshops
- Content planning
- Content creation
- Content ROI analytics and measurement
- Search Engine Optimization (SEO)
- Conversion Rate Optimization (CRO)
- Demand gen and nurture email workflows
Hiring me can feel expensive.
But we’re talking about a key cog in your go-to-market execution. If you don’t have the right content strategy in place, no amount of PPC spend or tradeshows or trendy MarTech is going to help you sustainably achieve your business objectives.
And the ROI from hiring me will be amazing. You will know what to prioritize in you content creation, how your audience will find it and engage with that content, and how that content is then attributed back to your business objectives.
